22-24 March 2007

Surujkumari Naraine

Celebrating her 74th birthday, we are having prayers at the Nursing home on Thursday 22 March, a mental worship of Shiva on Friday 23 March at home, and a family dinner on Saturday 24 March. Mom has accepted her condition in her compliant, dutiful manner, as she has accepted everything else in her life, still greeting everyone with a smile.

It is a great help now that the head of the kitchen at the Nursing Home is preparing special vegetarian meals just for her, so her dinner menu is now channa curry and rice, red beans, and soya dishes. For one who always made sure anyone dropping by either at the factory or Camp Street had a meal, this generosity is being returned to her.

Mom has always treated those who work for her with so much kindness and appreciation and this is still felt by the Personal Care Workers assigned to her. Imagine, her evening nurse telling me her son was laughing at her when she told him she wouldn’t wear black to work anymore because her patient didn’t like it! Mum’s pleasant personality touches even those not assigned to her - an Indian nurse would drop by to see her whenever he is working to put her Indian movie on and her beads. Does this mean that when you live your life showing kindness and caring to others it comes back to you in times of need?

Golden Age events continue to be her big social activity - she is happy to meet up with all her friends and of course the hair must be done for this event She was assigned to calling from a members list to remind them of each event, so she would look out for all of them.

If any of you were around when Daddy had a "few drinks!" you would’ve heard him trying to win her over by singing to her in his “sweet” melodious voice…'Jai Santoshi Maa'. Mum has always taken the path of devotion and it extends to everything she does.

Let your Light of Love, Peace and Joy radiate to those around you.
